Hi Scott,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Steiff teddy bears are significant because they helped invent the modern teddy bear and set enduring standards for quality and collectibility. Founded in 1880 by Margarete Steiff, the company introduced its jointed bear in 1902–03, around the same time the “teddy bear” craze began following U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. Steiff’s innovation included movable joints and durable mohair plush, elevating toys from simple playthings to finely crafted objects.
The brand’s signature “button in ear” became a mark of authenticity and quality. Early Steiff bears are now highly prized by collectors, often commanding strong auction prices. Beyond value, Steiff bears symbolize childhood nostalgia, German craftsmanship, and the global rise of branded consumer culture in the early 20th century.
It was not uncommon for bears to lose the ear buttons.
I don't see a photo of the Civil War clothing so I can't tell if this bear was produced by Steiff as part of an anniversary of the Civil War but other unlabeled Steiff bears of this size and vintage usually sell for between $200 and $300 at auction, though it's not uncommon for retailers to ask higher retail prices.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
