This is a fossil from the devonian era, measurements in pictures. This piece is fairly heavy, I assume, due to the stone the fossil is lodged in. I can see what looks to be shell and non-silt/sandtone material in the rock. It's possible there are more fossils embedded in the rock that could be carefully extracted, but I wouldn't wager anything more interesting is there. I have an email from a paleontology professor at the University of Michigan that verified it is an actual Devonian Cephalopod, email in pictures.
Discovered this myself in Petoskey MI
Dear Nathaniel,
Thank you for your help and I am very sorry for the delay with the appraisal.
The presented object appears to be a fossilized Devonian Cephalopod with the measurements of 100 mm long and 63 mm wide. The fossil is still embedded in the ground material and can not be identified clearly. There is a price potential because of the size of this fossil.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 200 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
Do you need anything else? Have there been any updates in the appraisal?
I've not heard anything from anyone in a week. Can I get an update?
