Hi Dana,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The Cabbage Patch Kids are among the most iconic toy phenomena of the late 20th century, with a story that blends innovation, mass marketing, and cultural impact. The dolls were created in 1978 by Xavier Roberts, an art student in Georgia. Originally sold as “Little People,” each doll was unique and handmade with soft sculpted bodies and yarn hair.

In 1983, Roberts licensed the dolls to Coleco, who rebranded them as Cabbage Patch Kids and mass-produced them with their signature round faces and soft bodies. By 1983–1985, Cabbage Patch Kids became a national craze. Stores struggled to keep them in stock, and “Cabbage Patch riots” occurred as parents competed to buy the dolls during the holiday season.

Each doll came with a unique name and adoption papers, fostering a sense of personal connection. This concept popularized the idea of toys as personal companions, not just objects.

Impact on Collecting and Marketing: The craze highlighted how limited availability and collectible features could create intense demand—a model that influenced later toys like Furby, Beanie Babies, and Pokémon.

The brand shifted hands several times—from Coleco to Hasbro, Mattel, and then various smaller companies—but retained its collectible and custom doll appeal.

Louann Mary / Louann Shawna–type Cabbage Patch Kid was from a Millennium Celebration or later Mattel-era series (late 1990s/2000s) rather than the original 1980s Coleco dolls. Most of these later dolls were made in larger quantities and are not considered highly rare.

At auction, this doll - and others from the 'E-doption' series - that are mint in the box usually bring around $25, a small improvement over its original retail price of $13 but not as much as the original Coleco dolls bring.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
