California landscape painting
12 January 2021
Description

Oil on stretched canvas, 16” x 20”, unsigned except for possible initials in yellow- NLH ‘42- maybe? They don’t look quite right to me- like a different hand than the artist. 2” antique gold hand-finished frame, seems original to the period.

Provenance

This is part of my family’s estate. I believe that this was a gift from a close friend from California and I understood it to be by Marion Wachtel. It’s been with my family for at least 60 years.

What does this mean?

Dear Ann,

Thank you very much for your patience and my sincere apologies for the delay with the apprisal.

The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 16 x 20 inches. The painting depicts a landscape that could be identified with California. The painting is monogrammed in yellow letters in the right corner "NLH" and dated 1942. Sadly is not impossible to identify the artist with stylistic arguments and with the help of reference books and auction result databases. The quality of the depiction and the structure of the representation of the perspective is a hint that this artist was talented and had an academic education.
Works by this artist were recently not offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 300 to 500 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

Hi Georg. I’ve taken some photos of the stretcher strips (with stamp from an art store in Pasadena, CA), the linen and stretching tacks as well as the interior of the frame ( no stamp or notes) and close up of frame profile and corner detail. Would that help?

I’ve tried repeatedly to delete the carving set image. I decided to just go ahead and send the extra photos. Hope it helps solve the mystery- of who painted the painting.
