Hi Greg,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This tale may have come from Panama but it was not made there; rather, this is an Anglo Indian carved wood - probably ebony - side table (sometimes called an 'occasional' table because it could be used for many things) that dates to the late 19th or early 20th Century. It is part of a large trend of furniture and decorative objects that emerged during British colonial rule in India, blending European forms with Indian craftsmanship.
Anglo Indian pieces often feature sturdy hardwoods like teak or ebony, adapting to tropical climates. Designs combine British styles—such as Georgian or Victorian—with intricate Indian carving, inlay work, and motifs like elephants, vines, and floral patterns. Cane and rattan were commonly used for ventilation and comfort. Decorative objects include lacquerware, brass items, and richly patterned textiles. This hybrid style reflects cultural exchange, practicality, and artistry, resulting in furniture that is both functional and highly ornamental, bridging Western tastes with Indian techniques and aesthetics.
