This mask was gifted to me by a family friend in 1974. All I know is that it was carved in Africa, as the friend lived there for a few years after WW2

Hello, this item is a carved wooden mask with exaggerated features, vertical ribbing, and projecting fangs, topped by two looped elements that form a horned silhouette. The carving is consistent with mid twentieth century workshop production for the tourist and export market rather than a mask made for community use. The back shows clean tool marks and an even cavity, which indicates decorative intent. The wood has an even tone without the wear patterns, smoke darkening, or ritual residue associated with field collected masks.
Masks of this type were produced across West and Central Africa for visitors during the postwar decades. Their value reflects decorative appeal more than cultural specificity. Large carved masks of this tourist category usually sell between 60 and 140 USD depending on size and condition.
