Ceramic German Chocolate Pot

Ceramic German chocolate pot, in great condition aside from small chip on pot lip, unsure of where it came from or who made it. My grandmother collected chocolate pots & purchased them from random antique shops over the years.

What does this mean?

Hi Kimberly,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
There were quite a few late 19th/early 20th Century German potters who impressed their works GERMANY in an arch that follows the line of the foot but I've not found this particular smaller underglaze mark and have asked a couple of colleagues - all experts in ceramics - and the general consensus is that this is pre WWII but no-one can identify the pottery. It has a nice decorative value that, given its history in your family, likely has more sentimental value than market value at $50-75 (even without the chip, it would most likely not get more than $100 at auction).

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage German parcel gilt earthenware chocolate pot
Unattributed maker, first half 20th Century
Of circular section with domed cover with single loop handle, the flaring conical body with lilies on a graduated brown ground, with a single loop handle. The underside with red arched GERMANY / 13 mark and impressed "1340"
9 inches high
CONDITION: Small chip loss to back of rim beneath cover but otherwise this appears to be in good condition.
PROVENANCE: inherited
$50-75*
