What does this mean?

Dear Roberta,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be an etching on paper with the measurements of 12" x 9.4". The print has the title "Le Clown Acrobate" and was made in 1967 (Cramer Nr. 12). Under the image, we see the signature of Marc CHAGALL (1887-1985). This could be one of the artists proofs because the edition is missing.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 1500 to 3000 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

Does the annotate make it more valuable? What has he written there in French?

Thanks

Dear Roberta,

The note doesn't change the value. In my opinion, it is a remark to the quality of this testing print. I read "Bon a fieza" or "tieza". In French bon means good but the last word remains unsolved.

With kind regards,
Georg

Georg,
You're right, the last word remains unsolved. I even asked someone who speaks French and she didn't know. Maybe it's the name of a friend or place. Very confusing--I should have asked Monsieur Lebouc when I bought it!
Thanks,
Roberta

Dear Roberta,

I asked also a friend of mine who comes from Southern France and also speaks Catalan. He told me in Catalan this means "good to fair" which could be interpreted as a comment on the print condition. But there is still the question of why it is written in Catalan because Chagall spoke French.

With kind regards,
Georg
