I received this in college from the theater department's costume archives. I believe it is a 1920's opera coat. It has a tapered length of 30" in the front down to 33" in the back, 16" sleeve measured from the shoulder down. There is a stain in the back and on the inside lining. It has a dropwaist knot button & loop closure and knot embellishment on the bottom back. The sleeves and collar have black velvet and black and metallic embroidery over a white fabric (white fabric shows signs of aging). The body material is a champage colored chenille.
I received this coat from the Chatham University Theater Department in Pittsburgh, PA. The theater dept was closing when I was a student there and was taking a costume design class. The dept. director gave me the coat as they needed to clear out their costumes.
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
It is a beautiful vintage opera coat. Such vintage clothes and accessories are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
Normally the best prices for vintage clothes are for items made by the wellknown designers like Chanel, Dior, YSL amongst others. This is certainly an opera coat that was expensive when produced however vintage clothes and gowns are often sold by the designer name and brand. The details on the sleeves is extraordinary and very detailed. The design of the coat is very elegant and from the photos it appears to be in very good condition with only minor signs of wear and use. From the looks and materials it appears to be from the first quarter of the 1900s which fits with your description of the coat being from the 1920s.
I believe that this lovely and very elegant opera coat would attract the attention of both collectors and dealers if it came up for auction.
The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online vintage clothings auction, where I believe the opera coat has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the opera coat. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
