This rug has a Chinese motiff and unique vibrant color palette. It has a central floral medallion and angular forms set on an ivory background. Other colors representing the art deco aesthetic include teal, mauve, gray-blue, peach and tan. A thick border is another special design feature. The pile is dense and it appears to made of high-quality, thick, durable wool. I was gifted this rug and have owned it for 25 years. I believe it was purchased in the 1980s ( but could be incorrect about this). There are no identifying markings on the underside of the rug indicating it's manufacturer. Additionally, it has a stain on fringe in one corner of the rug. It is otherwise in very nice condition.
93 inch width and 128 inch length including the fringe
Hello, this item is a large Chinese Art Deco wool area rug, most consistent with Chinese export production from the late 1920s to 1940s, measuring approximately 93 by 128 inches including fringe. The design combines a soft ivory ground with stylized floral sprays, geometric fret motifs, and a wide mauve border, executed in a muted pastel palette typical of Chinese Art Deco carpets made for Western interiors during the Republican period. These rugs were produced primarily in Tianjin and Beijing workshops, adapting traditional Chinese symbolism into modernized compositions influenced by European Art Deco taste. The dense wool pile, balanced symmetry, and softened color transitions visible here align with high-quality hand-knotted examples from this period rather than later machine-made reproductions. Condition appears very good overall, with even pile wear appropriate for age and use, intact borders, and only a localized stain to one fringe corner, which is a minor condition issue and does not materially affect structural integrity.
From a market perspective, large Chinese Art Deco rugs of this size and decorative quality typically trade between USD 2,000 and USD 5,000 depending on condition, color retention, and design appeal, with particularly clean examples sometimes exceeding USD 6,000 through specialized rug dealers. Comparable floral-and-geometric Art Deco Chinese carpets in the nine by eleven foot range regularly achieve USD 2,500 to USD 4,000.
