A Chinese wood carving, depicting a bear with a fish in its mouth, carved frame integral part of the wooden board, patinated to add a three-dimensional effect, dated 1951 and signed. Height 16.25 inches Length 17.50 Condition - tiny chip on tail of fish. Plaque has a split on the side.

Your panel is made in Japan in indeed mid 20th century. I agree 1951 is a date. Its made in Yakumo Japan and called Hokaido Hikuma carving. The inspiration for this carving most likely originates in Swiss.

From 1922 on these carvings were made in Yakumo and became a popular Souvenir for tourist who came to Japan. Usually you see the statues but also panels were made to hang on the wall.
Nice panel with a funny background and not so much commercial value i'm afraid.
