Hello Bernard,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Chinese Silk Rug. The piece likely dates back to the period from 1980-2000. Chinese weaving ateliers copying Oriental Rugs were established starting from the 1970's. Due to the high demand in Western Market, Chinese pieces with considerably lower prices created a significant market share. Wool on cotton pieces were produced more as serial productipn pieces and silk pieces were usually produced as an alternative to high quality Oriental Rugs from Turkey and Persia. Your piece's general pattern is for sure inspired from Persian Tabriz Rugs. The colour palette, and the contrast are all copied from traditional Tabriz pieces. The knot density of your piece appears to be quite high and therefore the motifs are rendered clearly. The main border of the piece was decorated on a dark blue base as well as the central decoration. The piece is centrally decorated therefore has a central medallion with floral motifs and two lanterns hanging from both sides of it. There are distrubuted "Herati" patterns on the piece which are like rotated squares between flower motifs. The piece is knotted silk on silk. Professionally cleaned. The piece appears to be in very good condition without any visible faults.
