Chinese Huanghuali Sideboard/Console
Probably Late Qing dynasty a large and heavy Chinese lacquered sideboard (L183cmx W50cmxH 80cm) made almost entirely on the same wood “Huanghuali” except the bottoms of the 4 drawers ,the top end and the bottom end of the piece. There are 2 little wooden spur like on top of each side popping out indicating that was designed to place another piece on top. There are 2 inner bottom shelves made of the same wood 88x42 cm with thickness of 1cm (10mm) the photo attached. One of the shelve has a width of 40cm on a single piece(trunk diameter)suggesting a large and aged tree possibly a few centuries old due to its slow growth process. Both side panels and the back of the sideboard are made of total of 12 pieces (55cmx20cm) 2 on each side and 8 in the middle with different characteristics of this rare and beautiful wood, (some photos on display) wished it was unlacquered. It has a sweet honey like fragrance every time i open the drawers, and this was the turning point in believing that was the wood obviously also supported by its exclusive translucent shimmering surface and abstractly figured patterns.
