What does this mean?

Hello Gerald,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, materials and the composition, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Made Chinese Wall Panell Decor. The piece dates back to the period between 1950-1960. In it's composition Soapstone and Mother of Pearl was used. The materials you refer as Jade is actually Soapstone, a hevaily used material in Chinese art. The material you referred as Ivory is actually Mother of Pearl and it's shine and colour palette is characteristic. Jade is a hard stone and was rarely used in larger compositions after the late 19th century. This piece is made with collage technique, which means more than one style of art or technique was used. Some decorations and motifs were carved out of soapstone while some were hand drawn. In this piece the artist tried to depict a courtier in a worshipping ceremony. A religious monument is visible on the left part of the scene while we can see an altar decorated with candles and offerings. The courtier accomponied by two soldiers was depicted in a bending posture which clearly confirms his state of worshipping. The godess of the monument was depicted above the clouds and above all composition. The rest of the decoration is entirely natural, showing tress and flowers. The piece is framed and it has two metal classical Chinese style hangers. The frame was also decorated with classical Chinese patterns in golden colours on wood. The piece is in good condition without any visible faults.

Entirely hand made.

Dimensions: 49 Inches by 50 Inches

Condition: The piece is in good condition without any visible faults.

Provenance: Purchased in China, in 1950's. Possibly in Hong Kong. Displayed in Family Asian Resturant untill 1980's.
