What does this mean?

Hi Framm,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The Western influences of this Asian-made small box are clear in the shape of the feet and decorative gilding. It was made for a Western (English or European) market, in China or Japan, probably in the late 19th Century, when technology made beveled mirrored glass widespread.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A Chinese or Japanese export green lacquered and parcel gilt papier mache mirrored dressing box,
late 19th Century
Of rectangular section, the hinged lid lined with character-inscribed paper and housing a beveled mirror in gilt-stencil cushion-molded frame, over a case fitted with four long drawers, on bracket feet. In an emerald-green lacquer allover, with gilt decoration.
Height: 11 inches; width: 13 inches; depth: 9 inches
CONDITION: This appears to be in generally good condition
PROVENANCE: Discovered at a flea market
$1,000-1,500*

Hi Delia,
I have seen boxes on the market , not like the one you have appraised, that are valued higher then the one in question and not as nice.
I have been looking, and buying and selling these boxes for 38 years and have never seen
one as unique as this. I believe your estimate is too low.
Please look again and let me know.
Kind regards

Good morning, Framm,
I appreciate the opportunity to revisit my valuation and yes, after digging a little deeper did find examples to warrant a higher value: $1,000-1,500. If this is still not sufficiently high, can you let me know and provide links to comparables at higher values? While I want to be fair, I also want to make sure I'm not over valuing things.
Thanks,
Delia
