Discovered in recent Grand Haven, MI renovation project. This is a 35 star usa civil war era flag that is 6 feet by 10 feet. The condition is just OK with significant tearing, but the flag is mostly intact. The grommets and cotton weave and hand stitching and peek-abo star patten ae all consistent with the 1863-1865 period when the 35 star flag was the official USA flag.
We uncovered this in attuc crawlspace to a 1920's era home in Grand Haven MI that we are doing a restoration on. We have some clues as to original owners and photos and letters to start research, but have no greater detail on possible history. The size is unusual and the star pattern is 4 rows of 9 - 8 - 9 - 9 stars which also seems to be unusual.
Good morning, Peter,
Thank you for submitting photographs to Mearto for appraisal.
Based on the photographs and information you have provided, all of which I agree with, your flag would likely bring between $300-500 at auction. Flags of this size are not as rare as one might think, and the condition of your is fairly poor, relative to ones of similar size and vintage that have sold at auction in recent months.
I hope this information is useful to you. Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you for using Mearto.
