Civil war era calvery sword belived to be used in battle.
I know nothing about the history of this item.
Dear Caleb,
Thank you for your help and my sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.
The presented object appears to be a Civil War period cavalry sword with a scabbard. The blade is marked P.D.L. The monogram stands for P.D. Luneschloss of Solingen who was an German swordsmith in the city of Solingen. The Luneschloss Company also partnered with Tiffany & Co. during the Civil War to make all of their swords.
Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in bad to medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 150 to 400 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
George
The image with the brand close to the hilt is the only identifying mark on the blade. Other than that there are several points on the blade that look to be from contact with other objects.
