Made in Japan. Great condition
5 inches by 5 inches
Hello, this item is a Japanese decorative piece made in the form of a clam shell, measuring approximately 5 by 5 inches. The object opens to reveal a detailed miniature diorama of a traditional Japanese countryside scene, complete with a thatched-roof house, trees, boats, and landscape elements, all worked in relief. The exterior of the shell also bears engraved designs, showing additional motifs such as figures and carts, consistent with late 19th to early 20th-century Japanese export decorative arts.
Such pieces were popular curiosities made for both domestic appreciation and the Western export market during the Meiji period (1868–1912). They combined traditional craftsmanship with imaginative formats, often using mixed metalwork or gilding to enhance detail. The condition appears very good, with intact relief and fine detailing visible in the photos. In today’s market, Japanese Meiji decorative clam shell dioramas of this size and quality typically range between 400 and 800 USD, depending on intricacy, provenance, and preservation.
