This is a Clementine Hunter oil painting c. 1990 from Natchitoches, LA. My dad was gifted the painting and frame then. The painting has never been removed from the frame since it was gifted in 1990, so it's in perfect condition. The frame is still in great condition, too.
11 5/16" x 9 7/16" with frame. 6.5" x 4.75" painting only.
Dear Elizabeth Lee,
Thank you for your appraisal submission. The work is an offset lithograph on paper, not a painting. This is visible in the rosette pattern upon close inspection. It is a reproduction print after Clementine Hunter's (American, d. 1988) "Outdoor Cookout." The original painting is part of the R.W. Norton Art Gallery's collection. The work is a folk art depiction of a black woman cooking at a stove outdoors with children and other figures surrounding the scene. The work is unsigned lacking both an in-plate and by-hand signature. It is in good condition and the sight measures 6.5 x 4.75 inches.
Clementine Hunter was a self-taught folk artist from Louisiana. She had worked on a plantation her entire life, until selling her paintings to locals in her 50s. Her work quickly garnered national attention, becoming a well-known folk artist depicting black life. Her original paintings continue to be highly valuable, selling above $10,000 consistently. However, prints like this subject work, are purely reproduction items and not works of editions authorized by Hunter. We estimate the Fair Market Value of this work between $0 and $200.
Thank you for your appraisal submission.
Kind regards,
Charlotte B.
