Theropod Dinosaur Fossilized Foot Print, Possible Coelophysis
Late Triassic (237 and 201.4 Million years ago)
North America
Measurements not given

A partial trace fossil imprint from a theropod dinosaur. The fossil imprint, or track, is typically characterized by three-toes and a slender footprint with claw marks, indicating they were bipedal. The example presents toes that are long and slender, with sharp claws. A presence of claw marks, with sharp edges that press further into the matrix than other portions of the foot is noted.

From images alone it is difficult to determine if this is a cast or a true fossil. The clean cut of the matirx, removing the bottom half of the impression would be unlikely to happen from a fossil removal. However previous damage could have been cut away from the example. It appears a heavy varnish and finishing were placed on the example. This too casts some doubt on the restoration process and care; also leading the assessment to a possible cast example and not an authentic trace fossil. However, with this information, an in-person assessment could be made by contacting a regional University Anthropology department, auction house that sells natural history examples, or geology society. Often these organizations and businesses have free assessments opportunities annually or with an appointment. Include any documentation and the measurements for assessment.

An in-person second opinion could results in a more firm conformation of the examples authenticity. If so, at auction the FMV estimate would increase to $150- $300 USD.

Caleb, I am away from my desk; and a larger screen to view the images you have sent. I will complete a full review for you next week. Yes, this is a great example. If it is cast it would range in price between 50 to 100 usd. It it is confirmed to be an impression and with better screen viewing, or an in person assessment to determine the matrix of the example; a price between 200 and 500 usd in a retail environment. And, 150 to 250 in an auction. Again, give me a few days to give you a completed assessment and you can chose to further investigate this example with experts in your area or online. Fossil collections are fascinating.
