Acquired in the 1970s from the Patrician Galleries Inc. in Illinois.
The appraised work is an oil on canvas painting titled ‘Compassion’ executed by American artist Calvin Waller Burnett (1921-2007). The work depicts two kneeling female figures facing towards each other, almost embracing. Burnett was a Boston-based painter and printmaker. He earned degrees from the Massachusetts College of Art and Boston University (he also eventually taught at the former for 30 years). His early career centered on printmaking and commercial art, but he experimented with nearly all mediums, subjects, and styles over the course of his career. Burnett worked on paintings for a considerable period, often on several canvases at once. He developed glaucoma in 1997 and had to retire from painting.
