Excellent condition. Head and neck, arms and legs made of composite material. Body of cloth. Hair is molded and painted. Eyes have eyelashes made of hair and open and close. Little mouth is slightly open with baby teeth showing. About 65cm in length. Quite a bulky little doll. She was given to my Mum for her 4th birthday about 1942. As it was war time and dolls were very scarce she had been sourced from another little girl (of about 14 years old) who no longer played with her.
History: The doll was given to my Mum on her 4th Birthday (1942). As it was war time and dolls were scarce she had been sourced from another little girl (of about 14 years old) who no longer played with her. On my Mum's death, 6 years ago, I inherited her 'baby'.
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
It is a beautiful doll. Such antique toys are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
The doll is quite sweet and appears to be very wellkept. The doll has arms, legs and head made of a kind of clay/composition, the body is made of linnen filled with sawdust or another soft material. This was the way babydolls were made in the 1940s-1950s. This fits with the year your mother received the doll. It was probably made in Germany that was producing all kinds of toys for export.
There were made quite a large number of these dolls and they were very popular amongst the children/girls. Today this is not the type of antique doll that collectors tend to pay high prices for. In fact I would suggest that you hold on to it and see if the prices eventually will increase if you consider selling the lovely doll.
I believe that it would attract the attention of both collectors and dealers if it came up for auction.
The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online toys auction, where I believe the antique doll has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to your mothers doll. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
