This twenty-two inch tall composition doll was made by the Ideal Doll Company in 1934. It is in excellent condition, and has composition head, arms, and legs, and a cloth body. She is wearing original clothes, socks, hat, and shoes, and has sleepy eyes. She was appraised in 1991 at $375.00
22" tall
Hi Ann,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A vintage Ideal composition and cloth doll
circa 1930s
with brown hair and brown sleeping eyes, painted features, composition head, arms and legs affixed to a cloth body. Wearing a white linen smock dress, hat, socks and shoes. Unmarked
22 inches high
CONDITION: repair to one arm; otherwise this appears to be in generally good condition.
PROVENANCE: inherited
$200-300*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.
Also, my mother's note under a photo she took names the doll "Arla." I don't know if that was the name she gave the doll, or if that was the model name.
Thanks for your help!
Thanks, Ann, that's very helpful.
I don't find the name "Arla" in my books on Ideal toys so don't think that name was the model name. The doll market has cooled a lot since 1991 and this may have been an appraisal for insurance (which is always higher than those for Fair Market / Auction, the latter of which are the appraisals Mearto provides).
Cheers,
Delia
I did not see any markings anywhere on the doll. My mother had this doll appraised in 1991, and on that report, which is pictured, it was identified as Ideal. The books used for the appraisal are noted: "10th Bluebook Dolls & Values" and "Antique to Modern" by Pat Smith.
I took off the clothes to look for markings, and I see the left arm has been repaired. I'm adding those pics to my collection.
