What does this mean?

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Based on the photographs and description provided, the subject of this appraisal is a set of Deagan Song Bells (Orchestral 2.5-octave Glockenspiel) Model #100, Serial Number #317, circa 1918 to 1924.

The piece appears in good used condition based on photographic examination. According to the current owner and photographs examined, the piece features minor scratches on the instrument's wooden frame. Resonators and keys are in excellent condition, and the stringing and felting are believed to be original. According to the owner, the nails that locate the keys are all in place some appear to have lost their sheathing. While the leatherette case appears in good condition, its leather straps are both damaged but the leather handle connecting the two straps is in good condition. The piece includes two mallets in fair condition. The stand is working and in good condition with some scratches noted.

Deagan Song Bells Model 100 Glockenspiels seldom come up in auction settings. In 2009, a similar piece hammered for $390 in an online format, but that appears to have been significantly undervalued. As the market for vintage professional-quality instruments remains relatively strong today, significant appreciation would be expected over this price if at auction. Based on similar models today available at online vintage instrument resellers and sites such as Reverb, and on items recently sold at online auction sites such as eBay can be found generally between $1,000 and $2,000. This piece's condition and completeness would arguably place this on the higher end of the spectrum.

In consideration of the factors noted, a Fair Market Value (pre-auction estimate) of this piece would be estimated at $1,500 to $2,000.
