Hi Joe,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This Chinoiserie double-sided four-fold screen dates to the mid 20th Century and was probably new (or recently made) when it was originally acquired following WWII. The panels under glass are made of hardstones - jadeite, coral and other materials - and are in good condition having been protected by the glass. The backs appear to be painted to emulate lacquer, which older frames were made of.
It's rare to find multi-fold screens with glass panels over the hardstone and in many cases, the hardstone pieces have been lost. This rates a higher value than those with losses; where most are worth between $500 and $700; this has a fair-market value for auction purposes at $700-1,000.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A vintage Chinoiserie hardstone and painted double-sided four-fold frame
mid 20th Century
One side depicting hardstone still life scenes under glass, the other side with painted floral decoration, the screens with pierced tops, sides and bottoms.
48 inches overall height; overall length: 60 inches
CONDITION: This appears to be in very good condition.
PROVENANCE: Originally acquired in Asia in the mid 1940s; purchased from a neighbor's estate sale circa 2001.
$ 700-1,000*
