What does this mean?

Hello Evan,

Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. The item presented appears to be a hand-colored sttel engraving after a work by Granville Perkins (American; 1830 - 1895). The engraving was etched by Robert Hinshelwood (English; 1812 - 1879). This print was published in a book titled "Picturesque America; or, The land we live in. A delineation by pen and pencil of the mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, water-falls, shores, cañons, valleys, cities, and other picturesque features of our country" (whew -- what a title). The book was edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton and Company in 1872. All of this is noted in the information you found at the Library of Congress.

As for if the print is "original" is a point of contention among art specialists. By definition, an "original" artwork is one-of-a-kind painting OR the sometimes thought to be the first few impressions of print or first run of a print. The image of the print was previously created by Perkins-- leading to the notion that the print is not original. However, the image as a print format, published in the 1872 book is the "original" publication of the print. I am sorry if that seems a little confusing prints as an art medium can be complicated. My professional opinion if that this print is an authentic impression of the original impression of the publication.

With all of that said, these prints are not very valuable. Most of the value remains in the books the print was pulled from. The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of this print and other pulled from the same publication. Thank you and please take care.
