The appraised work is an oil on canvas painting by American artist Everett Woodson (b. 1933). The artist is particularly well known for his landscape paintings, usually including structures like barns, small farmhouses and lighthouses. He often executed works in a variety of different locales and seasons. He received a formal education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kansas City and is the recipient of numerous awards from his home state of Missouri and surrounding rural areas.
Works by Woodson have appeared primarily at rural auction houses in the Mid West and Southern United States since the early 2000s. These paintings overall underperformed, either failing to sell or achieving a realized price at or below their low presale estimate. The appraised work’s inclusion of multiple figures is a unique feature, as the majority of Woodson’s paintings do not depict individuals. This characteristic was taken into consideration is the process of valuation. The estimate provided is based on examples of comparable size offered and sold at auction. In many cases, pricing for similar items available on the primary (retail) market vary and are usually higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
