Dorothy (Alden) Morang painting I believe done in pastels. Signed in 1960, an abstract artist using dark, warm colors. Wooden frame that measures 20" x 27" x 2" thick.
This is another piece my landlord has given to me to find out value. I believe Mrs. Morang was a popular southwestern artist, with a unique style.
Dear Ryan,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The appraised work appears to be a pastel abstract painting on paper which is signed on lower left ‘Dorothy Morang 1960’. Framed work size: 20 x 27 inches. It is in good condition overall.
Dorothy Morang (1906-1994) was a painter from Santa Fe, N.M. In 1940, she joined the Federal Art Project under the supervision of Vernon Hunter. After her work with the WPA was discontinued, she went to work for the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe, first as a secretary and then in 1945 as Curator of the Art Gallery and then for many years as Curator of Fine Arts in charge of the collection.
The estimation highlighted in red above is based on comparables offered and sold at auction in the last five years. The subject work’s size, the composition, condition (based on photographs and comments provided), as well as the artists’ current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar items available on the primary (retail) market vary and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
Best regards,
Karine
