Purchased at The Wickersham Gallery NYC in 1970’s during Gustav Rehberger showing of 200th Birthday celebration of Beethoven.
This is a grouping of 8 individual pen and ink drawings, each on a 3.5" x 6" paper depicting an artist's vision of the internal struggles of the German pianist and composer, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827). The drawings were executed by the Expressionist style figure artist Gustav Rehberger (1910 - 1995) for a 1970s exhibition in New York City and the Wickersham Gallery for the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven in 1970. Rehberger was born in Austria and emigrated to the US at the age of 13 and by age 14 he obtained a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago. Due to family hardships he was not able to accept two college scholarships in order to support his family. After serving the US in World War II he established an art studio in NYC and became an instructor at the Art Students League there. From the 1970s on, every year on Beethoven's birthday Rehberger paid tribute to his favorite composer by creating a performance art portrait of Beethoven within 29 minutes. The estimate is for the grouping of 8 images altogether and is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
