Hello Fran,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A Non-Authentic Snake Skin Hermès Clutch
CONDITION: Appears to be in good condition commensurate to age and use.
PROVENANCE: Client's Grandmother's Estate
FAIR MARKET VALUE: $0*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking
price may vary.
HOW WE CAME TO THIS ASSESSMENT:
Purses made before 1965 are stamped Hermès Paris. Handbags made after 1965 have 'Made in France' added.
Your purse does not represent the correct label for an authentic Hermès item.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto, and sorry for the unfortunate news on your purse.
Hello Fran,
Sorry you are disappointed with the appraisal,. Please allow me more time to give you an appraisal on the item as Elbief England not Hermès.
Thank you,
Michelle

An Elbief England Snakeskin Clutch
Circa 1960s -1970s
CONDITION: Appears to be in good condition commensurate to age and use.
PROVENANCE: Client's Grandmother's Estate
FAIR MARKET VALUE: $50-$100*

Elbief was a British company based in the Midlands. They were incorporated in 1942, and went out of business in the 1990s or 2000s. They made metal goods, including handbag frames, and at some point, they also made handbags too.
As far as the label " A Hermes product speaks for itself" there are no past reputable auction results for any items with this label. Also, there is no hard evidence in regard to Australia being a distributor, other than blogs speculating about this.
For information about Python Snakeskin:
-Python skin can’t be smooth. It is rough to the touch, and if you look closely, you can see each scale as a separate element.
-Python is susceptible to warmth. If you will touch snakeskin, the material will immediately get warm from the heat of your palm. Imitation leather, on the contrary, heats slowly enough.
The appraisal above is based on Elbief England Snake Skin Clutch , not Hermes.
Slightly disappointed this appraisal had the assumption all I wanted to know was if it were a legitimate hermes or not.
I knew upon submitting it that it was not a genuine hermes Paris item.
I was more interested in the hermes Australia, Elbief England and python skin information this appraisal may generate.
Still none the wiser on anything really.
