Hi Kathleen,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
It's sometimes difficult to identify the maker of these early bears without tags, buttons, etc. The shape of the head and ears, and the way the mouth and nose are distinguished, are similar to bears made by Gebruder Bing in Germany in the first quarter of the 20th Century.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A vintage mohair jointed teddy bear
European, early 20th Century
Lacking glass eyes, sewn nose, mouth and claws, cardboard joints, with excelsior stuffing. Apparently unmarked.
17 inches long; 5-1/2 inches across arms
CONDITION: Lacking eyes, with wear commensurate to age.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 200-300*

Hello, were you able to use any of the information I provided to arrive at an estimate? Thanks very much.
Hi Kathleen,
Thanks very much for your answers; they were quite helpful.
Best,
Delia
Sadly no tags and no pins where a tag would be in the ear line with Steiff. I squeezed him good and could not detect a growler. If I shake him I don’t hear anything. He is very crunchy when squeezed. Thanks for your expertise b
