This is a fang mask sold to my grandmother in 1986 by J. Camp Associates, LTD at 380 W Broadway, New York, NY 10012 (I don't think this is a business any longer).
11.5" Height x 6.5" Width x 15" Depth
Hi Gloria,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The "Siroto" provenance refers to this mask once belonging to Dr. Leon Siroto, an expert and collector on Fang cultural objects; he wrote the book "East of the Atlantic, West of the Congo, Art from Equatorial Africa' in 1995.
While this mask no longer has the value your grandmother paid for it in 1986, it still warrants a fairly high relative fair-market value.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique Fang polychromed and carved wood mask
Central Africa (Equatorial Guinea, northern Gabon, and southern Cameroon), probably late 19th Century
The fair-skinned face with dark hair and pierced eyes, nose and mouth. On a black metal stand.
11-1/2 inches high, 6-1/2 inches wide, 15 inches deep
CONDITION: appears to be in generally good condition overall with expectant wear commensurate with age.
PROVENANCE: inherited from grandmother who acquired it from J. Camp Ltd in NYC; previously owned by Dr Leon Siroto
$2,000-3,000*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
