Hello Susan,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Turkish Caucasian Kazak Rug, dating back to 1930-1950 period. The rug is clearly made by using Turkish Knot, these symmetrical knots creates very characteristic motifs that are geometrical. It is harder to render round motifs by using Turkish Knots compared to Persian Knots. Therefore, especially in early period Turkish Rugs we can easily detect that the most of the motifs are sharp edged and geometrical. This piece has a classical "Kafkas" pattern, this is the name given to Caucasian region in Turkish. These pieces usually comes from the Turkey's city of Kars or surroundings. The colours of the piece are very bright and very likely industrial colours, before 1930 most of the Caucasian area of Turkey didn't have acces to industrially made paint, therefore this helps us date your piece to after 1930.

Your piece's blue borders are decorated with star motifs, which are belived to help the owner of the rug to have a bright and clear future. On the central decoration we do see three chests, on the middle chest we can see a scorpion motif. Scorpion motif is one of the most common Turkish motifs of all time, it is knotted to protect the owner from jealous eyes and enemies. We can see floral patterns alongside other all over the piece, even the floral pattern are rnedered in a quite geometrical way. We can detect two shepherd dogs depicted on upper and lower chest, as the Turkish Caucasian people's main earning was livestock shepherd dogs has a signifacnt place in their lives. Therefore these animals were knotted on many pieces from this region. The rug was probbaly originally longer but was restored and it's fringes was rearranged which caused some part of the rug to be lost. In fair condition with signes of use and age.
