Framed painting of boats, signed McCaine. This is a wooden frame. On the back, it is marked, 125-1034. There was a fragile, typed description of the author on paper, on the back of the painting. It is no longer attached, however, I took a pic of the paper.
The frame measures 17.5" x 17.5". The canvas area measures 15.5" x 15.5".
Hello, this item is a small framed oil painting on canvas depicting moored sailboats along a shoreline, signed “McCaine” at upper left. The work is executed in a restrained mid-century modern style, with simplified forms, muted coastal palette, and linear rigging details, characteristic of American regional decorative painting from the mid to late 20th century. The canvas measures approximately 15.5 by 15.5 inches, housed in a 17.5 by 17.5 inch wooden frame. The reverse shows standard stretcher construction and a handwritten inventory-style marking (“125–1034”), consistent with gallery or studio handling. The fragile typed sheet found loose at the back describes the artist as Midwest-born and later active in Southern California, working in contemporary and semi-abstract modes. While this provides useful context, there is no independent gallery label or institutional provenance present. Condition appears good overall, with intact paint surface, light age wear to the frame, and no obvious structural issues visible in the images.
From a market perspective, signed mid-century American coastal or harbor scenes by lesser-known regional artists typically trade in the secondary market between USD 250 and USD 700 depending on size, subject appeal, and condition. The attached biographical note adds modest interest but does not elevate the work into a recognized fine art category. Based on current comparables for similar signed decorative oils of this scale, a realistic resale value for this painting would be approximately USD 300 to USD 600.
