Hi Mary,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
French provincial furniture had a special appeal because it blended fashionable Parisian taste with regional character and everyday practicality.
Unlike high style, urban-made pieces—often highly refined, delicate, and expensive—provincial furniture was made by local craftsmen across regions like Provence, Normandy, Brittany, and Lyon. These makers followed the straight of the Neoclassical style but interpreted them more freely and robustly. The result was furniture that felt warmer, sturdier, and more human-scaled. Painted furniture provided additional warmth to these pieces.
By the Edwardian period (c. 1901–1914), bedroom suites were well established, often including a bed, wardrobe, washstand, dressing table, and chairs.
Earlier coordinated bedrooms did exist—particularly in 18th-century French aristocratic interiors—but these were custom ensembles for elite clients, not a widespread fashion. The idea that an entire bedroom should match is fundamentally a modern, mass-market concept.
I would not have thought this bedroom set was as early as 1900 as the appraisal suggests (and call into question the use of the term 'oval' to describe the mirrored dresser as there's no oval incorporated) but have given this appraisal the benefit of the doubt if it was provided by a licensed appraiser.
In the current market, painted bedroom sets of this style have been selling for quite modest sums, typically for less than $1,000 for the entire set, and usually around $500.
