It is a dark reddish Baltic Amber of 40 beads in graduated size from about 2 millimeters to 3/4's of an inch. No scratches, no wear and feel warm rather than cool...they look really good and feel good. Probably more than 159 years ago as my great great uncle, John Gurley knew Abraham Lincoln who appointed him to be the first governor of Arizona. He never arrived as he died on the journey. Excellent condition although it may have been re-strung with red thread at one point. I am currently wearing them and getting compliments.
40 beads on red thread measuring 20.5 inches in length and the smallest beads are about a quarter of an inch in diameter. The largest are about 3/4 of an inch.. The smallest bead is a little smaller than a quarter of an inch and the largest is about half an inch across. Very graceful..
A "Baltic Amber" Necklace, probably 1920's
composed of 40 dark reddish hue beads graduating in size from about 6mm - 20mm.
Whilst red amber does occur it is very rare and the vast majority are red resign but this can be tested at a gem lab. I am accordingly valuing them as red resin.
Provenance:According to the owner the necklace originates from The Keith Family of Prairie Avenue, Chicago.
