This painting is an oil on canvas portrait by George Burroughs Torrey. The painting is dated 1930. It is 35.5" wide and 49" tall. The painting appears to be in very good condition with the exception of some frame wear on some of the edges. There are no tears or gouges. The photos show that there is some craquelure.
I purchased the painting at a local estate auction. The auctioneer said it came from an estate in Ohio but he didn't mention any other details.
This is an original, early 20th century, oil on canvas, portrait commission painting of an unidentified elderly gentleman by the American portrait artist George Burroughs Torrey (1863 - 1942) who was active in New York and Hawaii. His portrait commissions came from the likes of President Teddy Roosevelt and Taft and the Greek King George. 20th century commission portrait paintings by listed artists do not generally garner the highest prices at auction; more especially those of elderly gentlemen. If identified, the value could potentially raise a bit, but not tremendously. The estimate is for catalogue auction sale and is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary. Insurance and estate tax purpose appraisals will also vary and are not provided here.
