George IV Birmingham Gilted Sterling Silver Vermeil Snuff Box
01 October 2020
Description

Markings inside the lid are left to right, woman's head facing right (which apparently is the reigning monarch of the period), the maker's mark....LV&W (Ledsam, Vale and Wheeler) and a lion passant (denoting sterling silver made in England). Markings inside on the bottom left to right, an anchor (denoting Birmingham assay office), the makers mark again, and the last mark I cannot find info on. It appears to be a crescent moon with a tree inside it...... There are very, very light markings inside the lid.....one appears to be the number 1536. Below almost too faint to decipher it appears to be cursive lettering L.5.0.0 ??? In a rectangle centered on the top of the lid is engraved Andrew Bulger from his friend Richard Airey. Andrew Bulger was my g.g grandfather. If you google him you will find he was a Lt. in the Royal Newfoundland Fencibles and served in the War of 1812. He was awarded 2 medals for his service. He was later promoted to Captain and was appointed commandant of Fort McKay. Richard Airey, was a general in the British Army, he was also a Baron and Sir and had quite the military career. He was the one that issued the fateful order for the Charge of the Light Brigade.

What does this mean?

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

It is a beautiful antique snuff box. Such antique silver items are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
The snuffbox was made in England in the first quarter of the 1800 by the silversmiths Ledsam Vale & Wheeler in Birmingham. It has a very beautiful gilding on the inside of the snuff box and lovely elaborate decorations on the exterior. This is a nice collectors item. It also appears to be in fairly good condition and I am pretty sure that it would shine emensely if polished carefully.

The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online silver and objects of vertu auction, where I believe the snuff box has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the snuff box. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’m happy to help.
Thank you
