Hi Sonja,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Before the advent of digital scales and modern postal systems, postal scales were essential tools for accurately weighing letters and packages to determine correct postage. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, postage was calculated by weight, and mistakes could be costly. These scales were a key part of everyday business and communication, making them valuable historical artifacts that reflect the development of global postal services and commerce. The hinged box in the base would have kept stamps and other accoutrements for mailing.
Regrettably, the market for these is quite soft - one included with other brass desk accessories failed to sell with an estimate of $100-150. On it's own, this is worth $40-60.
