Colourful oil painting in oranges, yellows, pinks, whites, greens. 36” height x 48” wide x 3/4” depth. Has slight indentations where some of the background detailing is. You can feel the slight indentations where the paint has been moved to create texture. Some left behind brush hairs in some places. Definitely a true painting and not a print. Not to mention where the paint slightly “curves” around the frame in some areas. Signed with “H. Matisse 46” on the bottom left corner. Shows slight signs of discolouration along the border (perhaps from time?) I found it a year ago and had been meaning to look into if it’s the real deal as I recognized it immediately as one of Matisse’s girls. I know in his later years he got sick and started his paper works. The canvas itself seems somewhat weathered. The middle back bar has come loose and it has a wire across the back for hanging. I know some history on Matisse, I thought it might be an unfinished piece or an undiscovered as there is nothing with this name in his catalogue from what I could tell.
Found at stowed at the back of a thrift store in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Dear Janelle,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. The apprised object is a painting made in acrylic paint or less probably oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 36” height x 48” wide x 3/4” depth. The painting depicts a woman reading a book and is signed with the name "H. Matisse" and dated 1946. Neither the style nor the artistic quality of the painting is comparable to other known and secured works by Henri Matisse (1869-1954. Also, the canvas is a modern canvas how it was common in the last third of the 20th century. All these arguments classify this painting as a fake or forgery which has no value on the art market.
With best regards,
Georg
