Two pieces sewed together. 154" X 33" each piece
Owned by my great great grandma. Approximately 150+ years old
Hello Burak,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Turkish Uşak Eşme Kilim, dating back to the period between 1930-1950. The kilim is composed of two individual pieces. This is called a “Double Winged” design, coming from the term of “Çift Kanat” in Turkish. These piece were knotted for large halls and for the “Sofa” area of a traditional Turkish house which is the equal of today’s living room. When required, this large piece could easily be divided into to and could cover two different floor spaces. The piece is heavily decorated by traditional Anatolian motifs. The motifs in the central column are “Bereket” motifs with a “Star” motif in each piece. The larger symmetrical motif around the “Bereket” motifs are representing Chests and it is called a “Chest” motif. Each of the chests are filled with “Scorpion” motifs to prevent the owner of the rug from the bad fate and bad news. Composition of the piece is very colourful and the central base colour is black while the base colour of the borders are white, red and black. The piece is knotted wool on wool, a piece like this could take more than six months to knot if two people worked on it. A very collectable and high quality piece. The piece is in very good condition with small signes of age.
