Ornate Large gun powder flask
unknown
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry, and I apologize for the delay. This is likely an Ottoman powder flask. The ornamentation style and construction of the flask are very similar to comparable pieces from that region. This was likely made in the late 1700s-early 1800s. The flask is in excellent condition. It appears to be fully intact, and the ornamentation is sharp and legible. It was embellished by a method called "repousse," which involved placing the sheet-metal in tree pitch as a solid but malleable backing, and striking in the patterns with a chisel. This was a common ornamentation technique in the weapons of the Ottoman Empire in this period. Given the condition of this piece, and completed auctions of similar items, a fair market estimation is 200-225 dollars. Please reach out with any questions.
