Hand knotted rug made in Agra India, purchased locally approximately 1986. This has never been used in a high traffic environment or exposed to sunlight and has always been stored in a controlled environment. The condition is excellent - no wear or stains. I believe there are 20 knots per linear inch, giving approximately kpsi.

Hello, this item is a hand-knotted Indian wool rug from Agra, produced in the late 20th century, likely during the 1980s, consistent with the owner’s stated acquisition date. The design draws heavily from classical Persian and Mughal carpet traditions, featuring a dark navy field, ivory floral borders, and a central medallion motif. Agra has been one of India’s most important carpet-weaving centers since the Mughal period, and workshops there became particularly well known during the 20th century for producing high-quality export rugs inspired by Persian Kashan, Tabriz, and Isfahan designs. The close-up photographs confirm hand-knotting rather than machine manufacture, while the wool pile, cotton foundation, and finely executed floral ornamentation indicate a commercial-quality workshop rug rather than a tourist-grade souvenir piece. Based on the knot count visible in the photographs, the rug appears to fall within the medium to good quality range for Agra production.
This item remains in excellent preserved condition, showing strong color retention, clean fringes, and no obvious signs of wear, fading, staining, or structural damage. While attractive and well executed, rugs of this type were produced in significant quantities for the international market during the late 20th century, which limits rarity. Comparable 4’ x 6’ Agra wool rugs of similar age, quality, and condition generally sell in today’s secondary market for between $300 and $700 USD, depending on venue and local demand.
