Hi Bonnie,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Haviland China refers to fine porcelain dinnerware produced by Haviland & Co., a prestigious French porcelain manufacturer based in Limoges, France. Founded in the mid-19th century by David Haviland, an American businessman, the company became famous for its delicate, high-quality porcelain with elegant hand-painted designs.
Van Heusen Charles & Co. was a prominent retail establishment based in Albany, New York, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The company specialized in fine china, glassware, and decorative arts, collaborating with esteemed manufacturers to offer high-quality products.
The business was founded by Theodore Van Heusen, who, in 1869, operated as a dealer in fine china, glass, earthenware, and related goods at Marble Hall, located at 468 and 470 Broadway in Albany. The company later became known as Van Heusen Charles & Co., reflecting a partnership with Daniel D.T. Charles. Theodore's son, Charles Manning Van Heusen, played a significant role in the company's operations and was known for his association with President Theodore Roosevelt. While I've not been able to identify when the company closed, they are recorded as having sold Limoges Haviland porcelain plates made in France after 1920.
Limoges Haviland services come to auction from time to time; recently, they have been selling at auction for on average $3-5 PER PIECE.
