I bought the statue at an estate sell at a wealthy persons mansion in Houston, Texas. The statue weighs probably 300 pounds. There are no names or numbers on the statue. The statue is in excellent condition. I am not sure what the statue is made of. Bronze or stone?
The statue is about 4 to 5 feet tall
Hello,
Your item is a large, heavy statue depicting a standing Buddha or Bodhisattva figure, approximately 4 to 5 feet tall, acquired from an estate sale in Houston, Texas. Based on the photographs and description, the figure appears to be carved stone rather than bronze, considering the surface texture, coloration, and bulk weight (estimated around 300 pounds). It could possibly be limestone or sandstone, which are common materials used in Southeast Asian and Chinese Buddhist sculpture.
The stylistic elements—such as the flowing robes, serene facial features, and upright posture—are broadly consistent with Buddhist representations across China, Thailand, and Vietnam. However, the relatively generalized style (lacking highly refined drapery folds or distinctive iconographic markers like mudras or lotus bases) suggests that it may be a later decorative or architectural piece rather than a historical religious artifact. Many large Buddha statues of this type were produced for garden decoration, luxury properties, or temples during the late 20th century, particularly for export markets in Europe and the United States.
The condition is described as excellent, with no major visible damage despite the heavy handling. Given the lack of inscriptions, markings, or stylistic precision tying it to a specific historical period (e.g., Tang dynasty, Sukhothai, or Gandharan art), it is appropriate to classify it as a 20th-century decorative stone Buddha statue.
