Hello Klint,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Turkish Hereke Rug. The piece dates back to the period between 1970-1983. The piece is decorated florally with a Mihrap Design. Mihrap is the altar place of Mosques, and this figure is heavily used as one of the prominent figures of Oriental Rugs. The Rug is currently being used as a wall decor, but the rug is hung upside down. Smaller Hereke pieces are knotted almost as paintings, therefore their writings are knotted on their upper corners. Since this is actually a Republic Period Hereke piece from mid century yo last quarter of the 20th century it's writings are likely pseudo writings or amateurly copied writings from certain scripts. Turkish people use Latin Alphabet from 1928 onwards therefore these scripts are just woven to imitate the traditional Hereke pieces from the late 19th century. The piece's colours are quite in harmony with tones of green, sand and brown. The piece's Mihrap area was knotted on an Ivory base while the borders were decorated on a "river sand" colour. The knot density of the piece is incredibly high as usual to Hereke pieces, tehrefore the motifs are rendered in very high quality with clear shapes. The piece is knotted silk on silk. On the left upper corner of the piece we can see the "Hereke" writing. The piece is in good condition with minor signes of use.
Entirely hand knotted.
Dimensions: Referred as "Mendil" which means a "Handkerchief", referring to it's small size.
Condition: The piece is in good condition with minor signes of use.
Provenance: Purchased by the current owner's grandfather in Turkey, 1983.
Heavily decorated by traditional Hereke patterns.
2000-3500$.
