"Hermes Paris" red leather bag with gold accent, number "00815" on outer clasp. The leather has some noticeable surface scratches but it seems high-quality. The inner lining is tan. Height: 10.5", Width: 8" at widest point. Trying to see if it's worth restoring.
Previous ownership unknown.
Hi Leigh,
Many thanks for sending the extra images and information; it's much appreciated.
After examining the photographs and information provided, Mearto specialists have concluded that the subject work is a counterfeit Hermès Kelly Sport bag. There are several incorrect and/or missing essential elements detailed below that allowed specialists to establish this opinion.
Exterior of Bag:
-Authentic Kelly Sport bags feature a turn-lock closure with two sangles (straps). The right sangle bears a gold-plated or palladium clasp with the words ‘Hermès-Paris’ engraved. Based on the photographs provided, the subject work’s metal clasp is not engraved
-Kelly Sport bags have what’s called a blind stamp on the backside of the right sangle, which indicates the year the bag was made. Typically these stamps feature a letter enclosed within a shape, such as a circle or square. No such symbol was identified on the underside straps of the subject handbag
Interior of Bag:
-In addition to the exterior blind stamp, on the interior flap of Kelly Sport bags, there is a heat stamp that reads ‘Hermès Paris/Made in France.’ The stamp is either in gold or silver to match the bag’s hardware. After reviewing photographs provided, there is no evidence of a heat stamp on the interior flap
-The interior of Kelly Sport handbags tend to be done in the same color as the exterior, though sometimes the leather is different. For example, if the exterior is a rouge Box Calf or Courchevel, the interior would be the same color but possibly a different leather. The interior of the subject bag appears to be a taupe color while the exterior is a more Bordeaux hue
-The interior of the subject bag features a pocket with a zipper that dangles. Authentic Kelly Sport bags will either have a large slip pocket or a zipper that lies vertical to the teeth with no dangle. The zippers on authentic bags match the exterior hardware (usually gold-plated or palladium), feature a leather pull, and are typically engraved with an ‘H’ or ‘Hermès’
In addition to the list above, the subject work’s provenance, or history of ownership, could not be identified or confirmed, which also suggests that this handbag is not an authentic Hermès Kelly Sport.
Hermès handbags like the Kelly, Kelly Sport, and the iconic Birkin are some of the most coveted luxury goods on the market. Authentic bags retail for large sums and tend to be shrewd investment pieces, often consigned for more than their original price. Given the status of Hermès handbags as the ultimate exclusive accessory, they are widely counterfeited.
Auction houses that consign luxury items like Hermès handbags will only accept bags that can be fully authenticated, through a physical examination and by establishing a clear ownership chain. Therefore, there is no viable auction (secondary) market for counterfeit bags like the subject work.
I hope explanation is helpful, and please let me know if you have any questions.
All My Best,
Grace
Hi, Grace!
I uploaded the photos you requested--just let me know if you need any more! The only pocket in the purse (other than the main body) is the one with the zipper. There is no stamp anywhere else in the interior that I can see other than the metal plaque.
Thanks so much, and please let me know if you have any questions for me!
