Hi Daniel,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Wayne Gretzky is widely regarded as the greatest player in the history of ice hockey and one of the most influential athletes in modern sports.
Nicknamed “The Great One,” Gretzky revolutionized hockey through extraordinary vision, anticipation, and playmaking ability rather than sheer physical size or strength. Playing primarily in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1979 to 1999, he set records that remain almost unimaginable in professional sports.
Among his most remarkable achievements were the most NHL career goals, the most assists, the most total points, the most points in a single season and, if that weren't enough, he had four Stanley Cup championships with the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980s.
A famous example of his dominance is that he remains the only NHL player to record more than 200 points in a season — and he did it four times.
Although Wayne Gretzky still holds the overwhelming majority of major NHL offensive records, a few of his achievements have either been surpassed outright or seriously challenged in the modern era, the most notable when when Alexander Ovechkin surpassed Gretzky’s all-time NHL regular-season goals record in 2025. Gretzky finished with 894 goals, a mark long considered untouchable, but Ovechkin ultimately broke it after an extraordinary scoring career spanning two decades. That was widely viewed as one of the most historic milestones in hockey history.
Gretzky’s significance goes beyond statistics. In 1988, his trade from the Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings transformed hockey culturally and commercially in the United States. The move helped expand the NHL into nontraditional hockey markets, especially in the American Sun Belt. Many later NHL teams in places like California, Arizona, and Florida trace part of their popularity to the excitement Gretzky generated in Los Angeles.
He also became an international symbol of Canadian identity and excellence. During the Cold War-era hockey rivalries between Canada and the Soviet Union, Gretzky represented a new generation of offensive, highly skilled play that influenced hockey worldwide.
The longevity and high profile of his career made him a ready subject for sporting collectibles, from rookie cards, to signed jersey, game-used sticks and other championship-related material, which continue to be sought-after pieces in the sporting collectibles world.
He signed many sticks, both ones that were used in games and those that were not. These days, signed but unused sticks that come to auction usually sell in the $300-500 range, with those that are accompanied by a certificate of authentication by one of the top sporting collectibles authenticators (JSA, PSA, Beckett) can sell for a bit more than that.
If you're interested in selling this, I would strongly recommend working with an auction house - such as Heritage, Leland or Goldin - that have a dedicated sporting collectibles team and existing relationships with collectors at every value level.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
