I purchased this item at a Sotheby's sale (Christo and Jeanne Claude collection) a few years ago. This was the version of the collection owned by Christo and Jeanne Claude and it includes a note to the artists thanking them for participating in the project. I am potentially interested in selling the collection to help fund the purchase of an apartment, depending on what a more retail value might be. I have only opened the box once, and it should be in the same condition as at purchase. Hello,
This is a complete portfolio titled Hommage à Domberger, comprising 16 works produced by Edition Domberger in 2002. The portfolio includes screenprints, offset lithographs, digital prints, and collages on various high-quality papers, each signed, dated, and numbered 25/50. Additionally, it includes a title and justification page also numbered 25/50. Each sheet is stamped with the publisher’s blindstamp and housed in the original blue clamshell case.
Dimensions are approximately 14 3/8 x 11 7/8 inches (sheet size), with a folio size of 20 5/8 x 16 1/2 x 2 inches. The portfolio was purchased from the Sotheby’s auction of the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Estate and remains in excellent condition, having only been opened once, according to the client.
The project was created to honor the 55th anniversary of Edition Domberger and the 90th birthday of its founder, Luitpold Domberger. Notable participating artists include Christo, Richard Estes, Gerald Laing, Robert Mangold, Kenny Scharf, among others. The works are thus a cross-section of important mid-to-late 20th-century art figures.
Historical Context:
Edition Domberger is one of the most respected silkscreen print publishers globally, known for exceptional quality and collaborations with major contemporary artists. Hommage portfolios—produced on special anniversaries—are particularly collectible because they compile original works by a range of significant artists, some of whom (like Christo, Mangold, or Estes) have strong secondary markets. The provenance from the Christo Estate further enhances the portfolio’s desirability and historical value.
Portfolios like this are increasingly desirable among collectors, especially because individual sheets can also be framed separately, thus appealing to both collectors and interior designers.
