Hi Hallie,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Howard Miller clocks are a cornerstone name in American clockmaking. Howard Miller was founded in 1926 in Zeeland, Michigan by Howard C. Miller, son of Herman Miller (of Herman Miller furniture fame). Initially, the company focused on traditional chiming wall and mantel clocks before expanding into floor (grandfather) clocks.
This is an example of the firm's "MacArthur" model, which was introduced in the early 1940s, during World War II. It was named in honor of General Douglas MacArthur, one of the most famous American military leaders of the era. The naming tied Howard Miller’s clocks to patriotism and wartime pride, making it more than just a decorative timepiece.
Wood cases were typically walnut or mahogany, with a clean, restrained design compared to more ornate pre-war mantel clocks. It featured a chiming German movement (usually Hermle or early Kieninger), with Westminster chimes being the most common. Yours has the Kieninger movement; related examples that have come to auction recently have sold for between $250 and $350.
